Starting on September 18, 2023, current users of the PayPal Express Checkout payment gateway will be automatically migrated to PayPal’s latest checkout solution.
Today, there are several different PayPal integrations available through BigCommerce. One of these integrations, PayPal Express Checkout, was previously deprecated for new stores and does not receive regular feature updates.
Our current PayPal integration, called the PayPal payment gateway, provides all the benefits of PayPal Express Checkout and includes new features, such as:
Buy Now, Pay Later and installment payment options via PayPal Pay Later
Popular local payment methods in various regions
Built-in risk management tools to prevent fraud and minimize chargebacks
You will receive an email notification with information about the upcoming migration if your store:
Is currently connected with PayPal Express Checkout
Uses the default Optimized One-Page Checkout and does not have a custom checkout enabled
Is located in one of PayPal’s supported countries
On September 18, we will automatically enable the PayPal payment gateway in affected stores — no action is required by you, and there will be no interruption in your ability to accept payments.
In the Settings › Payments area of the control panel, you will see that the PayPal Express Checkout Settings tab is replaced with PayPal Settings.
From here, you can configure the new and updated features available in the PayPal payment gateway.

With powerful features to enhance your checkout and encourage conversions, migrating to our latest PayPal payment gateway will open up new opportunities for you and your customers. Look forward to having an entire ecommerce toolbox, right at your fingertips!
