AHP Dental & Medical has been a trusted name in the B2B dental supply industry since 2006. Headquartered in Australia, the company has grown into a leading supplier of dental consumables, serving more than 3,000 of the country’s 11,000 dental practices.

Recognizing the potential for growth, new ownership identified key areas for improvement — particularly regarding their ecommerce site. With 75% of transactions still initiated via phone or email, Anthony Rubin, Director and Owner of AHP Dental & Medical, knew the key to growth was building a robust ecommerce store with an exceptional user experience.

The first step? Leaving behind their outdated platform in favor of a scalable solution that could streamline operations and drive growth. Thankfully, they found BigCommerce.

CHALLENGE

Limited by an inefficient and complex platform.

Before migrating to BigCommerce, AHP Dental & Medical conducted most of their business through phone or email. While there was an existing online presence, it functioned as a front-end system only, requiring manual input and data capture after each transaction, resulting in significant backend work.

“We recognized the incumbent online system wasn’t the solution we needed to scale or streamline operations,” Rubin explained. “As part of our due diligence in buying the business, we identified that improving systems and processes was critical.”

With more than 3,000 customers and 8,000 SKUs, AHP Dental & Medical sought a scalable B2B ecommerce platform that could automate processes and handle the complexities of their operations. However, finding the right solution proved challenging, with the majority of available platforms catering to B2C rather than B2B needs.

SOLUTION

Filling gaps with an integrated ERP.

For AHP Dental & Medical, the success of their B2B ecommerce operations hinged on creating a seamless connection between their ERP system, MYOB, and BigCommerce. Unlike other online sites, not all of AHP’s transactions originate within BigCommerce, but all flow through MYOB, making integration critical to ensuring smooth operations.

Doubling down on the digital experience.

Migrating platforms has enabled AHP Dental & Medical to offer a more cohesive digital experience, cutting costs and more effectively catering to customer preferences. 

Before implementing BigCommerce, AHP Dental & Medical relied on a quarterly 72-page glossy catalog mailed to clients, costing $15,000 per quarter or $60,000 annually. Transitioning to BigCommerce allowed the company to go fully digital, replacing the printed catalog with a PDF version and eliminating printing and mailing costs. 

“The printed catalog cost around $15,000 per quarter. We stopped producing it when we went online with BigCommerce and transitioned to creating digital copy, saving us significant costs,” remarked Rubin.

BigCommerce also provided the tools to promote their new and improved online store. The team launched the new website with an email campaign promoting its features and offered online-only specials to encourage customer adoption. 

“For six months, we included a reference to the new site on every invoice,” Rubin explained. “This, along with online promotions and SEO, helped drive traffic and familiarize customers with the site.”

By leaning more into the digital experience with BigCommerce, AHP has streamlined operations, reduced costs, and created a modern, efficient customer journey.

Streamlining online payments.

Before transitioning to BigCommerce, AHP Dental & Medical’s payment process was both manual and time-intensive. Customers who paid by credit card, which accounted for about 500 transactions per month, had to call in and provide their details over the phone. Sales team members would then physically enter the card information into a payment terminal — an inefficient process that consumed valuable time and resources.

With the move to BigCommerce, AHP streamlined and digitized their payment system. Now, all transactions are processed seamlessly online, fully integrated with the company’s ERP. 

“Thanks to MyIntegrator, all ERP orders and invoices are reflected online instantly, plus invoice payments are now entirely automated and fully synced with our ERP, which simplifies reconciliations and makes the process far more efficient,” remarked Rubin.

RESULTS

Saving time and money while growing customers.

Since integrating BigCommerce, AHP Dental & Medical has experienced substantial growth. One of the most significant shifts has been the increase in online orders. Initially, just 25% of transactions were conducted online; today, that number has soared to 75% thanks to site features like the ability to view and repeat orders, access current and past invoices, and manage multi-user workflows. 

“Our customers really love the new website, especially the repeat order and account management features. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive,” shared Rubin.

In addition to improving shopper satisfaction, BigCommerce has helped AHP Dental & Medical expand into new markets.

“We previously targeted the dental industry, but after going live with BigCommerce, we found ourselves supplying vets, podiatrists, physiotherapists, pharmacies, and even hospitals,” said Rubin. “It’s been a tremendous success.”

As AHP Dental & Medical continues to grow, they plan to focus on expanding their reach and gaining new customers in the Australian dental market.
