Barbeques Galore has been supplying Australians with barbecues, backyard lifestyle products, and heaters since 1977. Since its founding, they’ve built a national network of 90 retail stores that work to help customers make the most out of their outdoor spaces.
While maintaining their robust retail arm, they also sell products through a network of wholesalers, including 200 independent distributors in Australia, and an extensive network of global sellers.
This unique blend of direct-to-consumer (DTC) and business-to-business (B2B) selling requires a keen operational understanding — and the technology to match.
In early 2023, Barbeques Galore was eying new markets for potential expansion, and realized that there was vast untapped opportunity in the ecommerce portion of their B2B business. Their ecommerce platform at the time didn’t allow for self-service transactions, and broke up the user-experience between online and offline interactions. They were also unable to add new storefronts, regions, and channels through their platform, which limited their ability to scale.
They knew that, in order for these new expansions to be successful, they needed a robust ecommerce solution that gave them scalability, speedy time to market, and the ability to create a customer-centric experience online. This meant self-service opportunities for B2B customers in addition to their already expansive DTC base.
Barbeques Galore turned to their longtime agency partner Amblique to find an ecommerce platform that could give them a stable foundation for future growth.
“BigCommerce was the obvious choice for our needs because of the multiple storefronts we’d be operating in both Australia and New Zealand.”
Angus McDonald, CEO, Barbeques Galore
After identifying their specific needs, Amblique and Barbeques Galore chose BigCommerce as their engine for growth. “BigCommerce comes out of the box with B2B features that would allow their website to get off the ground quickly,” said Stephanie Byrne, CEO of Amblique. “It was also really cost effective when compared to their competitors. Those factors, plus our longstanding partnership with BigCommerce, made the choice of platform a no-brainer.”
Prior to moving to BigCommerce, Barbeques Galore was not utilizing online functionality for the B2B portion of the business. In a world where customers expect a high-quality online experience, they knew it was important to create a fast, easy-to-use self-service solution for their customers.
As a starting point for the build, Amblique used the BigCommerce Cornerstone and Camden themes to customize a unique design for their B2B and DTC storefronts. The Barbeques Galore team customized the front-end user interface, while the Amblique team was able to work on back-end modifications to support the unique needs of B2B customers.
Amblique made extensive use of B2B Edition, employing features like a quick order pad where customers can add specific SKUs to their carts in bulk, CSV upload ordering, and the ability to issue and complete orders based on quotes.
Another B2B feature the team took advantage of was price lists and customer groups. The Barbeques Galore team can assign existing price lists to specific company accounts, making them distinct from the default pricing shown to new customers.
Once a company account was created, the back-end automatically generated a corresponding customer group in the BigCommerce control panel for other users from the same company. With unique groups assigned to each company, the Barbeques Galore team was then able to view approval status of orders within specific accounts, export company information, and manage price list assignments across multiple companies.
For payments, Amblique used the native BigCommerce B2B payment features to configure both online and offline payment methods. Barbeques Galore leveraged both of these features, and natively integrated with the Adyen payment gateway.
Finally, with the invoice portal, Barbeques Galore can enable diverse payment methods for faster, efficient and satisfying transactions, accelerating invoicing and payment processing.
Barbeques Galore was also able to take advantage of another piece of native functionality — BigCommerce’s Multi-Storefront feature. This functionality allowed them to manage multiple storefronts with ease and to reach new customers across segments, regions, and verticals, all while personalizing the purchase and post-purchase experience across categories.
“BigCommerce was the obvious choice for our needs because of the multiple storefronts we’d be operating in both Australia and New Zealand,” said Angus McDonald, CEO of Barbeques Galore.
Barbeques Galore was able to set up four separate storefronts, all managed from the same BigCommerce back-end: B2B storefronts for both Australia and New Zealand; a DTC storefront for New Zealand; a Pricotech B2B storefront for Australia; and a Ziegler and Brown content site for New Zealand.
Each of these four separate storefronts are managed through the same back-end, and all draw their product information from the same catalog. This means that Barbeques Galore only needs to maintain product data, like price, description, and inventory, in one location.
From a consumer perspective, DTC prospects are able to browse and purchase from the Barbeques Galore New Zealand site, while B2B prospects can use a protected login to purchase in bulk, generate invoices, and finalize payments both inside and outside the platform.
“In addition to using the native B2B and DTC functionality, we have recently implemented BigCommerce’s multi-location inventory feature, which really helps us enhance the accuracy of stock levels at our sites and give our customers an accurate idea of what products are available where. That can have a big impact on our sales, whether a customer is buying one grill or 100,” McDonald said.
“We are confident that our long standing partnership with BigCommerce and our platform expertise will continue to drive growth and success for Barbeques Galore.”

“Since launching our B2B portal, we’ve been able to quickly grow the number of B2B customers and order volumes to really accelerate this area of our business. The entire project has been a success, and we're confident that BigCommerce and Amblique will continue to fuel our growth well into the future.”

Barbeques Galore was looking for a cost-effective and comprehensive solution to help grow their B2B offering in new markets. They found it with BigCommerce. “BigCommerce, alongside our agency partner Amblique, provided the perfect ecommerce solution. Their B2B platform seamlessly integrated with our existing systems, allowing us to create a dedicated storefront with features like self-managed streamlined ordering workflows,” McDonald explained. “Since launching our B2B portal, we’ve been able to quickly grow the number of B2B customers and order volumes to really accelerate this area of our business.
“The entire project has been a success, and we're confident that BigCommerce and Amblique will continue to fuel our growth well into the future,” he continued.
The new B2B implementation has been so successful, in fact, that they’re now working with over 70 dealers across Australia and New Zealand, whereas they were only working with one prior to their self-service BigCommerce implementation.
While BigCommerce has powered the experience, they couldn’t have created the final product without the help of their agency partner, Amblique.
“We're excited to help Barbeques Galore launch their business into the B2B space. As an existing client of Amblique, we've been working with them for years and have a deep understanding of their business and needs. We are confident that our long standing partnership with BigCommerce and our platform expertise will continue to drive growth and success for Barbeques Galore,” Byrne said.

While Barbeques Galore has invested heavily in its online infrastructure, they now have turned to their network of retail locations. In 2021, they took home gold at the Sydney Design Awards, and have since remodeled 34 of their physical stores. This new design provides an immersive, engaging retail experience.
They have also begun investing more in product renewal, with the development and launch of several new lines, like the Ziggy portable barbecues, the Firehawk brand, and expanding sales of innovative global brands like Napoleon, Traeger, and Beefeater.
These improvements, along with their online expansion, has helped Barbeques Galore create a one-of-a-kind unified experience across channels. Having significantly invested in their ERP, OMS, CRM, and ecommerce platform, Barbeques Galore now has the ability to support an integrated experience, no matter where their customers are shopping. And they know that no matter what new frontiers open up next, BigCommerce and Amblique will be there to help power the experience.
“We see continued growth being underpinned by these investments as we broaden the reach and appeal of our brand to customers in Australia and beyond,” McDonald explained. “The extension of this capability beyond our Australian retail business into our wholesale and international markets is an exciting opportunity to really accelerate our growth in coming years.”
